1st Test: Zimbabwe v India at Bulawayo, 7-11 Jun 2001

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

It's a cold day here at Bulawayo for the start of the two Test
        series between India and Zimbabwe
Hello and welcome to Bulawayo for the first Test between India and
        Zimbabwe
This two Test series promises to be an absolute cracker with India
fired up after their recent series win against Australia
However, the victory against the world champions came at home for
the Indians and we all know only too well how the Indians fare
        abroad
The phrase Tigers at home and pussy cats abroad springs readily to
        mind
And Sourav Ganguly's Indians are only too aware of this tag
Keen to notch up a victory and end a losing streak, Ganguly has at
his disposal a well balanced team
For 15 years now, the Indian team has not won a single Test match,
yes that's true, not a single Test match outside the subcontinent
The Zimbabweans are on a high too, always a dangerous team at home
Recently, Heath Streak inspired his team to a 2-0 triumph over
        minnows Bangladesh
It's a wintry day here at Bulawayo, with the weather man predicting
a high of 21 degrees and a low of 10 degrees. Partly cloudy all
day is what the met office reckons
Join CricInfo.com for LIVE ball by ball coverage of this series,
following all the drama as it unfolds
The Zimbabweans for this first clash are going in with the
following team: DD Ebrahim, GJ Whittall, SV Carlisle, ADR
Campbell, +A Flower, GW Flower, *HH Streak, AM Blignaut, HK
        Olonga, BA Murphy,
The Indians are going in with Das, Ramesh, Laxman, Tendulkar,
Ganguly, Dravid, Dighe, Srinath, Harbhajan, Zaheer Khan and Ashish
        Nehra
The Zimbabweans have won the toss and Heath Streak has decided to
        bat first
To open the batting young Dion Ebrahim will have vice captain Guy
        Whittall for company
India have gone into the match leaving out Ajit Agarkar and
replacing him by left arm seamer Ashish Nehra
For thoise who might not be familiar with him, Nehra is a tall,
lanky left arm mediumpacer from Delhi and has had a very
        successful season in domestic cricket
It is rather rare to see India playing two lefdt arm seamers
The pitch looks hard and might have a bit in it for the fast
        bowlers
There's a bit of grass on the pitch but it still looks like it will
        be good for batting
Henry Olonga has been drafted into the Zimbabwe squad at the last
moment replacing the injured Travis Friend
Speedster Henry Olonga was not in the initial squad of 15 named by
the Zimbabwe Cricket Union and yet makes it to the XI
The players are onto the field now
Javagalk Srinath will begin the proceedings for India with that
        shiny new ball
0.1 Srinath to Whittall, no run, short of a length and on the off, the
ball comes in a bit off the seam and raps the pads, shourt for
        lbwe turned down
0.1 Srinath to Whittall, FOUR, full and outside the off, that was way
too overpitched and was flayed through the covers, perfect start
        for Whittall
0.2 Srinath to Whittall, no run, short of a length and on the off, the
ball comes in a bit off the seam and raps the pads, shourt for
        lbwe turned down
0.3 Srinath to Whittall, one run, short of a length and on the pads,
tucked qaway to the on side
0.4 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, full and on the pads, rapped again and
a stifled shout from the bowler, not out that
0.5 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, short of a length and outside the off,
        leftr well alone
0.6 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, short of a length again and the ball
moves awa nicely, too much in fact, the ball leaves the right
hander late and he lets it go through to the keeper

End of over 1 (5 runs) Zimbabwe 5/0
J Srinath 1-0-5-0
GJ Whittall 5* (3b 1x4) DD Ebrahim 0* (3b)

Ashish Nehra gets the new ball ahead of Zaheer Khan
This can only be in view of the fact that he gets a bity of
        movement early on
1.1 Nehra to Whittall, no run, just short of a length and on the pads,
the ball shapes down the leg side as the batsmen half heartedly
        plays and misses at that
1.2 Nehra to Whittall, no run, another one that shows signs of
swinging, Nehra coming from over the wicket and shaping the ball
        in to the right handers
1.3 Nehra to Whittall, (noball) no run, just short of a length and
outside the off, the ball jags back in sharply and the bats, man is
surprised, cut shot playd and chopped down onto the pads
1.3 Nehra to Whittall, no run, once more the ball angls across the
right hander and shapes in late, rapped on the pads, good movement
        here for Nehra
1.4 Nehra to Whittall, no run, short of a length and outside the off,
the ball goes straight across the bat this time, not swinging in
        at all, left well alone
1.5 Nehra to Whittall, no run, full and way down the leg side, the ball
swings extravagantly even as Whittall letds the ball go through to
        stumper Dighe
1.6 Nehra to Whittall, no run, full and on the off, the ball comes in
and Whitttall plays that with the full face of the bat held close
to the pads, off the pad and bat towards cover

End of over 2 (1 run) Zimbabwe 6/0

End of the second over and Zimbabwe are off to a tentative start
with 6 runs on the board
2.1 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, just short of a length and outside the
off, left well alone, good carry through to the keeper, Srinath
generating good pace in his second over
2.2 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, quicker one, Srinath puts in that bit
extra and in the process loses out on direction, the ball spears
down the leg side and is left well alone
2.3 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, just short of a length and outside the
off, that is on the right spot, Ebrahim watches it to the end and
lets the ball go through to the keeper
2.4 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, once again short and wide, Ebrahim
using the opportunity to have a look at the ball well, Srinath
probably needs to get the ball closer to the batsman early in the
        piece
2.5 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, full and on the off, this one is bowled
from slightly wider on the crease, defended with an angled bat
towards the off side by a watchful Ebrahim
2.6 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, fast, full and way down the leg side,
once more Ebrahim wants nothing to do with it, playing only when
        needed, left alone easily

GJ Whittall 5* (10b 1x4) DD Ebrahim 0* (9b)

3.2 Nehra to Whittall, one run, full and on the off, this ball swings
in and Whittall drops the ball down to the off side, tapped with
soft hands, Ebrahim is ready and sets off for a single in a hurry
3.3 Nehra to Ebrahim, (noball) no run, quick and late swing from just
outside the off, full as well, rapped hard on the pads, but a no-
ball again, no problem with the line calls here it seems!
3.3 Nehra to Ebrahim, no run, short of a length and outside the off,
this one swings away from the right hander, left alone with ease
Ebrahim seems to be a very careful and watchful player
Ebrahim seems to be a very careful and watchful player
3.4 Nehra to Ebrahim, no run, short of a length and outside the off,
left alone once more, Ebrahim demonstrating maturity beyond his 20
        years of age
3.5 Nehra to Ebrahim, no run, full, fast and swinging late for Nehra,
the ball sneaks past the bat and raps the pads, loud shout for
lbw, only the height saves Ebrahim, top ball that
3.6 Nehra to Ebrahim, no run, another one that comes from outside the
off and makes the batsman hurry on his shot. Ebrahim brings the
bat on that one fast and manages to keep it out

4.2 Srinath to Whittall, no run, full and extra pace from Srinath,
Whittall plays all over that ball and is rapped hard on the pads,
straddling the crease Whittall is at the receiving end of a loud
        shout, turned down
4.3 Srinath to Whittall, no run, just short of a length, fast and down
        the leg side, left alone

6.1 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, short of a length and outside the off,
that is left alone, Srinath needs to get the ball in closer to the
        bat more often
6.2 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, full and on the off, angled in to the
right hander, defended to the off side with the full face of the
        bat
6.3 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, full and way down the leg side, well
left alone by the batsman, wasted energy for the mediumpacer from
        Karnataka

Ebrahim moves back and across beautifully and taps the ball to the

off, played back to the off side off the back foot

Srinath bowling a bit badly on a responsive wicket, a man of his
experience should be putting the ball in the right spot more
        consistently
7.1 Nehra to Ebrahim, no run, just short of a length and outside the
off, the ball is left well alone even as it comes in late, Ebrahim
seems to know exactly where his off stump is
7.2 Nehra to Ebrahim, no run, full and outside the off and good shape
in to the right hander, Ebrahim shoulders arms and is rapped on
the pads, good shout there for lbw, saved by the bounce
7.3 Nehra to Ebrahim, no run, full and on the off, swinging in late,
defended back down the track, Nehra adjusting his length well here
7.4 Nehra to Ebrahim, no run, just short of a length and outside the
off, left alone once more as the ball swings in late, well bowled
and even more well left there, Ebrahim looks to be a good bet for
        an opening batsman
7.5 Nehra to Ebrahim, no run, quicker one, just a touch on leg stump,
Nehra flicks his wrist and gets a bit of extra pace, the batsman

Nehra using the new ball well, getting good movement
Perhaps it's time Ganguly gave Zaheer Khan a go from the other end?
8.1 Srinath to Carlisle, no run, short of a length and way outside the
off, left alone easily, this is not very good from Srinath,
letting the batsmen settle in here
8.2 Srinath to Carlisle, no run, fuller and outside the off, driven to
        the man at point
8.3 Srinath to Carlisle, no run, just short of a length and on the off,
punched back down the ground with a heavy bat, Srinath collects in
        his follow through
8.4 Srinath to Carlisle, legbye: one run, full and on the pads, Srinath
wavering in line once more, the ball bounces off the pads and
squirts away to the on side
8.5 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, short of a length and too far outside
the off, this is getting poorer from India's most experienced
        mediumpacer
8.6 Srinath to Ebrahim, no run, short of a length and way down the leg
        side

       left well alone
This might just be Srinath's last over
Would surprise no one if Zaheer Khan came on to bowl in place of
        Srinath
9.1 Nehra to Carlisle, no run, just short of a length and on the off,
Carlisle plays and misses at a good straight ball from Nehra,

11.2 Nehra to Ebrahim, no run, full and down the leg side, more late in

Apologies, it was Zaheer Khan who appealed last over and not Nehra
as mentioned, the presence of two left arm seamers seems to be
        confusing our commentator!

13.2 Nehra to Ebrahim, (noball) no run, short of a length and quick,
striving for extra pace Nehra oversteps
13.2 Nehra to Ebrahim, no run, full and on the off, the ball is tapped

At lunch Zimbabwe are 65/3, having lost three important wickets
Although the session did not go too badly for the hosts, they will
be a touch disappointed in the manner in whicjh wickets fell
First to go was Guy Whittall who dragged one back from Nehra onto
his stumps. That should have been left alone
Second to go was young Ebrahim who batted so well to get to a
patient 12 off 60 balls. He was run out at the non striker's end
when a drive from Carlisle hit Harbhajan Singh's hand and knocked
        over the stump
Finally the third wicket, that of Stuart Carlisle, fell with less
than 10 minutes to go for lunch. Zaheer Khan returning for a quick
spell before lunch got Carlisle to edge a ball to Laxman at slip
In the bowling department, India will be disappointed with the way
Srinath bowled. Spraying the ball all over the place and bowling
consistently short of a length Srinath ended with figures of 10-4-
        19-0
Ashish Nehra was easily the pick of the bowlers, using the
conditions well and getting the ball to swing both ways

Not a very pretty scorecard if you are a Zimbabwe supporter
173 all out after winning the toss is hardly what Streak would have
aimed for when he won the toss and elected to bat
India have done well to bowl Zimbabwe out so cheaply, although it
was really only mistakes by batsmen that caused the downfall

Match State: Stumps - Day 1

Join CricInfo.com first thing tomorrow morning for all the live
action from this intriguing match at Bulawayo
Hello and welcome to Bulawayo for all the action from the second
day's play of the first Test between India and Zimbabwe
Having been bowled out for just 173 after electing to bat first,
Zimbabwe managed to recover some lost ground by reducing India to
83/3 at stumps on the first day
Still 90 behind, Sachin Tendulkar and nightwatchman Javagal Srinath
        resume the proceedings for India
With only two frontline batsmen to come - skipper Sourav Ganguly
and his deputy Rahul Dravid India are certainly not on top of this
        game
For Zimbabwe the hopes must rest firmly with their mediumpacers -
Heath Streak, Henry Olonga and the express quick Brighton Watambwa
However one cannot also discount the fact that legspinner Brian
Murphy will be used more and more as the game progresses. Whether
he will be successful against Tendulkar, Ganguly and Dravid -
three very good players of spin, remains to be seen
