At Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo, September 23. New Zealand won by 167 runs. Toss:
Bangladesh.
After their bowlers had given Bangladesh the scent of an upset, their batsmen capitulated ineptly
as New Zealand ended their disappointing defence of the trophy with a crushing victory. Bangladesh
managed one more run than their all-time low on the same ground in August. Five of the top six
failed to reach three as Bond proved the agent of destruction. His weapon was sheer pace, reinforced
by field-settings from Fleming that ran to four slips and a gully. Earlier, New Zealand had plodded
to 244. Sinclair's tortuous 70 off 122 balls was the cornerstone, but the star of the morning was
Mohammad Rafiq, who bowled his slow left-armers with considerable skill and great variety.
Man of the Match: S. E. Bond.
