INDIA v WEST INDIES

At Brisbane, January 11

15-Apr-1993
At Brisbane, January 11. West Indies won by six wickets. Toss: India. West Indies preyed voraciously on the weaknesses of their opponents, who missed the injured Shastri, to register their first win of the competition. Ignoring their experience of the Gabba and the help a fresh pitch there offers seam bowlers, India batted first and were dismissed cheaply. Outstanding West Indian bowling, bad shots from the openers and the early run-out of Manjrekar all undermined the innings. It was kept alive by Tendulkar's immaculate 77 and his seventh-wicket partnership of 76 with Kapil Dev. Extras also made a valuable contribution, thanks to umpire Hair's bizarre interpretation of wides. West Indies, too, started poorly. But they were assured of victory by Haynes, whose 52 stretched through 38 overs, and Richardson, who regained his touch after five failures.
Man of the Match: A. C. Cummins. Attendance: 7,567.
