Smith does well - but England draw level
South Africa's young captain Graeme Smith started the 2003 tour of England in superlative form, scoring 277 in the drawn first Test and 259 in the second, at Lord's, which his side won. But England fought back to win the next Test, then South Africa won again, to lead 2-1 into the final match at The Oval. When Herschelle Gibbs led the tourists to a total of 484, it looked as if England would lose the series - but an amazing fightback, led by Marcus Trescothick, Graham Thorpe and Andrew Flintoff, saw England square the series in remarkable style
